Beng Melea

🍃 The Other Angkor 🍃 | Cambodia (2019) The Angkor Archeological Complex gets over 3 million visitors per year (that works out to about 8,000 people per day), and even though it’s a huge complex, it actually FEELS like 8,000 as you’re shuffling along narrow walkways or jostling for a people-free shot in front of a strangler tree. I kind of expected as much, so while we of course went to Angkor Wat while we were in Siem Reap (more on that soon), we sought out a few Angkor Wat alternatives to help color the Cambodian temple experience a bit rosier. Beng Mealea is about 68km from Siem Reap, but apparently that’s just enough to protect it from the tourist hoards that swarm the rest of Angkor. It has a relatively mysterious history, but it was likely built around the same time as Angkor Wat. And the coolest part of Beng Mealea? It’s almost completely overgrown; imagine sprouts coming through breaks in the walls and trees taking root in open courtyards. There’s also a long wooden walkway running through the site that is pretty beautiful to walk along. And you can explore it nearly on your own. Not bad, heh?

Banteay Chhmar

This is the carving of an eight-armed Bodhisattva Lokeśvara which I’m standing in front of in my previous post... as you can see it’s not in the best of condition these days... in some areas the sandstone has deteriorated and the head of the Lokeśvara is missing... but enough details remain for us to identify things and see what’s going on... • Notice the Apsara flying in the air holding a garland of flowers... the three Lion Atlantes holding up the platform which the Lokeśvara is standing on... and what appears to be six Asuras? kneeling beside the Lokeśvara with their hands brought together in front of them in a gesture of prayer... quite interesting ☺️🙏 • Banteay Chhmar temple, Bayon style, late 12th - early 13th century, King Jayavarman VII... • • • #banteaychhmar #khmer #khmerart #khmerican #angkor #angkorwat #siemreap #cambodia #buddhism #culture #asianart #explore #ancient #archaeology #architecture #architecturelovers #beautiful #style #cambodian #beautifulcambodia #bayon #angkorthom #sculpture #travelgram #bbctravel #ancientruins #ancienthistory #arthistory #artgallery #angkortemples
